Although other crown materials, such as lithium disilicate and zirconia, have made great strides in recent years, PFM crowns continue to add value as a restorative solution for a number of specific situations:

• Patients with hard bites or bruxism can benefit from an indestructible metal occlusal surface that wears on the opposing dentition
• Metal rests and lingual surfaces can be made to accept cast metal removable partial dentures with precision attachments for clasp-free cast metal removable partials

Porcelain fused to metal can be used for single anterior and posterior unit crowns and bridges, and can be designed to fit any type of preparation as well. Porcelain can be fused to non-precious, semi-precious or white/yellow high noble substructures.
